Climb & Run the Kanchenjunga Marathon is a unique opportunity to climb Mt. Thinchenkang, 6010 m. with renowned mountaineer and Everester, Kunzang Gyatso. Kunzang first climbed Mt. Everest in 2008 and has 21 + peaks to his credit including opening of new peaks in Sikkim and India.

Thnchenkang is one of the most beautiful and technical peaks of west Sikkim. Savour the experience of climbing with the guidance of an Everester and then run with local Sikkimese runners through beautiful mountainous terrain. The climb and race take place in the Kanchenjunga National Park, base camp of the 3rd highest peak in the world and India’s highest peak, and offer runners stunning vistas of mountains, rivers and valleys that will leave you with lifelong memories and a chance to say you climbed and ran the Kanchenjunga, the world’s most spectacular and toughest heritage marathon.





Day 1: 25th Oct (Thursday)
NJP train station / Bagdogra airport / Bhadrapur airport – Yuksom, 1780 m.

On arrival to be met by marathon representative and a scenic drive to your hotel in Yuksom. Arrive at Yuksom, check in with our registration desk and you will be allotted your room and handed over your race packet containing your Runners T-shirt, Wind Cheater, BIB No. and race instructions.

Day 2: 26th Oct (Friday)
Yuksom, 1780 m. sightseeing of Coronation throne & Dubdi monastery

After breakfast we will take a leisure tour of Yuksom and some of the historical sites (the Coronation throne & Dubdi monastery) situated in this small village. Rest of the day is at your leisure to rest and get ready for the trek ahead. A short expedition & race briefing will be conducted prior to Dinner.

Day 3: 27th Oct (Saturday)
Trek to Tshokha, 2946 m. 7 hours

We walk gently uphill, following the Rathong River gorge, through dense mixed jungle with magnolia, rhododendron, ferns and several varieties of orchids, brightly colored birds, and the occasional monkey. After an hour or so we cross the Paha Khola bridge, (1,733m.). This is a long trekking day and you should expect to be pretty tired by the time you arrive at the camp.

Day 4: 28th Oct (Sunday)
Dzongri, 4020 m. 5 hours

A fairly steep climb above Tshoka takes you into beautiful rhododendron forests, and you continue along a well-defined uphill path to Phedang. From her we start treading above the 4,000-meter mark. We will be setting up camp by lunch time and suggest that you spend a relaxed afternoon acclimatizing.

Day 5: 29th Oct (Monday)
Dzongri, 4020 m. Rest & Acclimatize

Today we rest and acclimatize to the height we have gained. A short nearby excursion to a meadow (Deorali Danda) with magnificent views of Koktang 6147 m., Rathong 6678 m., Kabru 7353 m. Kanchenjunga 8534 m. and Pandim 6691 m.

Day 6: 30th Oct (Tuesday)
Thangsing, 3639 m. 5-6 hours

Today we ascend gradually over open hillside for a mile or so to a low ridge visible from the campsite, 4,115 m. From here, chortens and prayer flags overlooking fabulous views of Kanchenjunga and Pandim make ideal photo-compositions.

We then descend, at first traversing down towards Pandim on the far side of the valley, and then dropping steeply down on a good path through rhododendron forest to the Prek Chu River at 3,749 m. for lunch (3 hours).

We then cross the river and ascend gradually for one and -a-half-hour, through pinewoods to reach a grassy campsite, beneath the shapely unclimbed peak of Pandim. Trekkers huts has been built here, which we use for cooking and sleeping.

Day 7: 31st Oct (Wednesday)
Base Camp, 4310 m. 3 hours

After breakfast a short hike to our base camp. Here we get ready for the expedition ahead and some trial practice to get know each other’s styles and techniques.

After an early breakfast, we set of early in the morning to the base camp for the start of our marathon. The measured distance of the course is 42.195 kms (26.2 miles).

15:00 Race is over. The runners and spectators move back to their hotels/hostels for shower and rest.

After an early breakfast, transfer to NJP train station or Bagdogra to catch our flight / train back home. End of program.
